Roads and intersections

Council is responsible for the maintenance of local streets and intersections. Each financial year, funding is allocated towards the resurfacing of local streets, kerb and channel improvements, local access network improvements, and necessary intersection upgrades and major road works. You can contact Councillor Davis if you believe a street within McDowall Ward should be resurfaced or improved.

Waste and sustainability

Council manages a range of waste services, including bin collections, waste vouchers, Resource Recovery Centres, kerbside collection, and clean-up of Council areas.

Waste Bins

Brisbane City Council’s general rubbish bins, recycling bins and green waste bins are collected on the following schedule:

• general household rubbish (bin with a red, dark green or black lid) – weekly
• recycling (bin with a yellow lid) – fortnightly
• green waste (bin with a lime green lid) – fortnightly

If your bin is not collected on your scheduled collection day, phone Council’s on (07) 3403 8888 to arrange for your bins to be emptied.

To request an additional recycling bin, register for the green waste recycling service, or report damage to your bin, phone Council on (07) 3403 8888.

Waste vouchers and Resource Recovery Centres

Council provides residents with 10 free vouchers every year to help households remove general waste and green waste at Council’s Resource Recovery Centres. Vouchers are delivered to rate payers.

Each individual voucher permits the free disposal of 100kg worth of either general waste or green waste. Free recycling is now available at all four Brisbane City Council resource recovery centres.

Resource Recovery Centres operate between 6:30am – 5:45pm daily.

Kerbside Collection

Brisbane City Council’s kerbside collection is an annual service across all suburbs in Brisbane to help you dispose of large household items.

The collections are held on a specific week for each suburb. You will be notified of your collection week with a flyer delivered to your property at least one week before the collection starts in your suburb. Items for collection must be placed on the kerbside in front of the property by 6am on the first day of the collection period.

To find out your suburb’s collection date, go to www.brisbane.qld.gov.au and search for ‘kerbside collection’. Acceptable items for kerbside collection include:

• furniture and white goods (e.g. fridges and stoves)
• small household appliances (e.g. fans and toasters)
• carpet and rugs
• bath and laundry tubs
• wood products less than 1.5 metres
• bicycles and sporting equipment
• electronic waste (e.g. televisions and computers)

Ensure you check what items are accepted as part of this large item collection service and find out about other resource recovery options for large household items in usable condition.

Footpaths

To report a damaged footpath or to request footpath maintenance, call Council on (07) 3403 8888.

If you would like to request the installation of a footpath in your street, contact Councillor Fiona Davis via the McDowall Ward Office. Each year, funding is allocated towards new footpaths for each ward. Requested footpaths are placed upon a list for consideration. As the McDowall Ward Office receives many footpath requests, priority is given to older footpath requests on the list, streets that do not already have a footpath installed, and footpaths that are required for safety reasons. Councillor Davis submits the footpath list as a Council Budget bid each financial year.

Before a footpath is approved for installation, residents of the street will be surveyed to identify whether the majority of residents support a new footpath in their street. If the majority of residents in the street indicate support for a new footpath, Councillor Davis will submit the footpath request for the next financial year’s budget. If the majority of residents in the street do not support the installation of a new footpath, the request will not be submitted.
