Women, men, and children of all ages who are victims of domestic and family violence need to feel safe and supported and I encourage any local resident who might be experiencing violence of this nature to immediately call a support organisation or the police.
Today I had the opportunity to speak with local people affected by domestic and family violence and I thank them for sharing their stories.
Community organisations are at the forefront of helping victims of domestic and family violence, providing emergency help and support, yet many of these organisations are struggling for resources and funds themselves.
I was pleased to meet some of the volunteers from SANDBAG who were the organisers of today’s walk, and I look forward to working with them in the future.
It is a sad fact that increases in domestic violence across Queensland has been reported in the past decade, and I am informed by local police that there have been quite substantial increases in the number of domestic violence applications to the Magistrates Court in Queensland.
