Aspley Garden Club Friendship Day Sub-Tropical Gardening PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 11 September 2009 00:00

As I have mentioned before, we are very lucky in our area to have so many dedicated individuals who beautify their gardens for the viewing pleasure of all of us.

On the 10th August, I was privellaged to be invited to attend the  Aspley Garden Club's Friendship Day at the Aspley Uniting Church Hall.

I never cease to be amazed by the displays on offer at these events, and was particularly inspired by the theme of the day - Sub-tropical Gardening.

An elegant presentation was given by Ian Wintle, with the heliconias, costus, and beehive gingers particularly taking my fancy.

I commend the efforts of theCommittee of the Aspley Garden Club in their supurb organisation of the event.

Build A Better World - Aspley Girl Guides

Aspley Girl Guides held a trivia night on 10th September to raise funds as part of a badge.

The Build a Better World badge is a series of eight challenges for the girls to explore how we can really make a difference through advocacy, friendship, challenge and enterprise.

I was encouraged to see that all attendees contributed to the raffle tickets, food, coffee, and clues for the trivia.  In total $326 was raised and given to the Pyjama Foundation.

Monday, 07 September 2009 00:00

I was very privellaged to be invited to attend the Geebung - Zillmere, Bald Hills - Aspley RSL Sub Branch and Women's Auxiliary 2009 Presidents' Dinner.

We all know that the various RSL groups in our communities serve the interests of their members, veterans, the ex-service community and members of the Australian Defence Force in an exemplary fashion.

As they daughter of an ex-serviceman, and as someone who has spent some time in the Army myself,  I encourage locals to support the initiatives of the RSL whenever they can.

Women’s Auxiliaries providing fantastic support to their RSL Sub Branchs, Clubs and communities, and for further information you can visit the following websites -

Queensland Railway Institute’s 61st Annual Lawn Bowls Carnival PDF Print E-mail

QRI 61st Annual Bowls Carnival

I was delighted to be asked to roll the first bowl to open the Queensland Railway Institute’s 61st Annual Lawn Bowls Carnival.

Queensland Railway Institute has been providing member support, activities and events since 1894, to railway employees.

John Patterson, Queensland Secretary and Treasurer of QRI Social Bowls Club, and his Carnival Committee, should be commended for their efforts and dedication to the sport.

I was delighted to see the turn-out of over 130 QRI member bowlers from as far away as Townsville and Charters Towers.

I know that Aspley Memorial Bowls Club, as host of event, provided a professional and warm welcome to these bowlers from around the State.

Justices of the Peace - Award Certificates PDF Print E-mail

Gordon Irwin, Tracy, and Mario Marchese

Years of Service to Society

I was privileged last Monday to present Mr Mario Marchese and Mr Gordon Irwin with certificates recognising their respective 25 years of service to our community as Justices of the Peace.

Both Mario and Gordon are valued members of the community who perform a significant role in our society.

These important volunteer workers in Queensland’s legal system perform a variety of services, from witnessing the signing of papers to hearing certain matters in court.

There are various levels of Justices, with Mr Marchese being a Commissioner for Declarations and Mr Irwin a Justice of the Peace (Qualified).  The difference between these two categories is that Justices of the Peace (Qualified) may deal with Police documents.

For further information about becoming a Justice of the Peace, please visit their website www.justice.qld.gov.au/justices-of-the-peace.htm
